The art or craft of stained glass?
Statistically speaking, we live marvellous times: never before in mankind’s existence has there existed such a high proportion of “artists”. Where once there occurred but infrequently the birth of a Titian or a da Vinci or a van Gogh, now it seems that just about everyone is (or has an Aunt who is) an artist. This is certainly the Miracle of our Age. At Williams & Byrne, we cannot begin to understand the cause.
Therefore we shall content ourselves with designing and making something well.
Something which lasts.
Something for a specific person or a specific group of people.
Something for a specific place.
We’re not concerned with “exploring the nature of memory”, nor with “pursuing a protracted investigation of childhood (or loss, or identify)”, nor with “understanding the hegemony of gender”. Our pleasure in what we do (and we certainly love what we do) and anything else which goes on “inside” our heads — these things truly matter not a jot when it comes to assessing the quality and meaning of our work we do for you.
Do you like what we’ve designed and made for you in glass?— We trust so.
Is it singular, is it “its own thing”, is it an exception? — We trust it is.
Is it well made and made-to-last? — Yes.
Have we used the best materials for you? — Yes.
Have we worked well with and for you? — Again, we trust so.
Let’s leave things there. Quantifiably there.
We’ve absolutely nothing against introspection and analysis. But, ultimately, wouldn’t you rather pay us to design and make you something gorgeous than have us ramble on about the privileged meaning that the object has for us? We can explore ourselves in our own time and at our own expense. We want to be practical and down-to-earth with you.
